'Ode To Billy Joe' By Bobbie Gentry - Week 2 Entry 5: Devising Session 2 Evaluation

Scenario/Introduction:

For this fifth entry for the second week on this assignment, I'll be covering both the Strengths and Weaknesses that came out of the session. They will both be covering the whole group as this is a collaborative process that must be evaluated constantly to hopefully improve once the performance date is near.

The Strengths:

Strength 1 - Experimenting With Other Physical Styles: As I'd detailed in my Blog for the second session on this assignment, we had worked with many Physical Theatre styles from practitioners such as Stanislavski (Naturalism) and Frantic Assembly (Naturalism with a mix of over-exaggerated emotions). Whilst working with these two styles, after moving on from Commedia Dell'Arte, we had come up with many more ideas for our game show which we could transfer between multiple other styles if we chose to run into them but, for now, we'll be working with a more Frantic style. We even brought some elements from Commedia Dell'Arte, such as Stock Characters and couples, to fit into the Frantic style of the game show.

Strength 2 - The Selection Of The 'Game Show' Idea: I think that going with a game show for this stimulus is very unique, especially compared to the other two groups for this assignment. This idea appeared to be unexpected when revealed to our lecturers and they seemed to show a very positive reaction towards it so we stuck with it. We had managed to get a lot of work done for this game show idea in a short span of time which is indeed good. I hope that next session we can continue to further develop the game show idea to increase its overall dramatic and performance potential as well as bringing in inspiration from other game shows that I'd previously mentioned such as Deal or No Deal, The Chase etc.

Strength 3 - Disagreements Within The Group: I'd mentioned that in the session when we were experimenting with different Physical Theatre styles that both Frankie and Sophie had disagreed to work with Naturalism and the works of Stanislavski. Mentioning this is something which we're getting graded on so I thought I'd talk about it in these blogs. The only bad thing about this strength is that they didn't have a valid reason to give other than that they simply didn't want to do it because they don't like the style. We worked with it anyway and it proved to not work, but experimentation is key within this assignment. I'm open to any other opposition that they might have towards certain things in our process later on in this assignment but it needs to have a validated reason.

The Weaknesses/What Did I Think About This Session Overall?

If I'm going to be honest, I felt that there were no weaknesses at all within this session. We all worked very well as a team as we had experimented with many Physical Theatre styles, took notes of what we had done and brought them up for later use, sat down and thought of some inspiration to draw from to help develop our game show. All of these things make me even more excited for the next session as we'll return with what I believe to be so many more new ideas to experiment with also. The only drawback from this session was Milo as I'd felt he didn't really contribute very much, nearly the same level as what he was like for the first session on this assignment. I kept this away from being the only weakness as he had worked very well with the rest of the group during the experimentation period and there wasn't a point where he was sitting out like he was before.

A rating out of ten for this session will be a 9.5/10. I give this rating as we had to move on from our original idea from the previous session about having a mystery, story-line heavy performance. That's not to say that we can abandon the idea completely as we can still draw some ideas we were going to use for that and transfer it into the game show format.
